St. Madeleine Sophie Barat
The Network of Sacred Heart Schools traces its legacy to St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800. She aspired to provide young women with the opportunity for strong religious and academic training. Her vision became a reality in France, and St. Madeleine Sophie Barat enlisted St. Rose Philippine Duchesne to expand the Sacred Heart mission around the globe.
St. Rose Philippine Duchesne
In 1818, St. Rose Philippine Duchesne settled in New Orleans and created the foundation for the Sacred Heart education in North America. She opened the first free school in the western frontier at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in St. Charles, Missouri. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne dedication, spirituality, and courage established the strong Network of the Sacred Heart that exists across America today.
