All student-athletes must visit their Magnus Health portal and fill out all necessary forms by July 15.
On 7/28/22 at noon an important email was sent to all Upper School Parents and Students regarding fall sport tryouts. Read it again.
Sport Registration 2022-23
ALL students planning to play a fall or winter sport for the Gators in 2022-23 must fill out this sport interest sign-up so that we can adequately plan for anticipated roster numbers. This will also allow us to communicate any optional training sessions or captain's practices that may take place over the summer. Sports that have held optional open gym or open field sessions in previous years include: Soccer, Field Hockey, Volleyball, Cross Country, and Basketball. These sessions are optional and will likely begin in July.
Fall Tryouts
Upper School Fall Sport (Cross Country, Field Hockey, Soccer, Tennis, and Volleyball) tryouts will begin on Monday, August 22 and run through Thursday or Friday of that week. The exact time of the tryout sessions and any first week scrimmages will be sent out by mid-July. Participation in the tryout week is critical for being considered for a roster position for the fall sports programs.
Any other Upper School PE or fitness activities will begin after Labor Day and more details will be communicated prior to that time.

Parent/Family Resources
Technology
Laptops and Screen Time
Summer is a great time of year to play outside, get lost in a book, build something creative, and explore new places! We recommend that your child take the opportunity to minimize time spent on screens, including their school laptops, cell phones, and television. Students should not take their school laptops on trips or camps.
Family Technology Agreements
The beginning of summer, when most online schoolwork falls away, is a great time to reflect on and revise your family agreements around technology use. This can be an opportunity to fine-tune your expectations around technology and renew a conversation around how your child can balance their interests.
Plan as a family - Try using this Common Sense Media template for drafting a Family Media Agreement, or write up your own family agreements.
Check in regularly - Periodically prompt your child to reflect on how their technology use is making them feel, and how it is supporting or limiting their other activities.
Address problems together - Parental controls on devices can be effective, but they work best for learning when they are part of a dialogue aimed at growing into self-management.
Health & Wellness
Lisa Damour’s podcast about how kids should spend summer 2022 is worth a listen. She recommends 5 things:
- Sleep
- Learn new skills (i.e., juggling, cooking, fixing household items, etc.)
- Take safe risks (stepping out of one’s comfort zone)
- Meet new people (kids AND adults)
- Be of service; make one’s self useful to the world beyond one’s self
Listen to the 30 minute podcast to hear more about each of these items along with suggestions and a full resource list as part of the “show notes.”
Speaking of sleep, which is number ONE on the list, summer is a great time for families to talk about their values surrounding sleep. Yes, sleep hygiene is important, yet it is only one component of helping teens to maximize their sleep. Discussions around family values can help everyone to decide what classes, activities, etc are important and which ones can be shifted to allow for necessary sleep. Sleep is an essential ingredient in mental health.

- Guide to Teenagers and Sleep (Child Mind Institute)

Summer Reading
Here are 100+ books that are suggested to the Stone Ridge community for optional reading. These resources have been a vetted for parents and students.
