Stone Ridge STEM Certificate Program Components
Goal II in Action. Students pursue deeper understanding and experience in STEM:
-
By graduation, students will complete a minimum of 8 units from the Math and Science Departments, including three core science courses (Physics, Chemistry, and Biology) plus at least two advanced placement/honors courses in a STEM/STEAM subject area. Students will also complete a minimum of 0.5 units from Computer Science (Computational Design, AP Computer Science Principles or AP Computer Science A) and 0.5 units from Engineering (Explorations in Engineering or Theater Technology).
-
Typically following the Third Academic year, students will complete an in-depth summer internship in a STEM area. Qualifying internships offer students the opportunity for hands-on experiences in a STEM field working under the mentorship of a supervising expert
Goal IV in Action. Students are community learners and leaders both in and outside of Stone Ridge:
- Students complete an article featuring an interview with an expert, often their STEM internship mentor, which they will submit for publication (like the Stone Ridge newspaper, Here and Now).
- STEM Certificate candidates will teach other students on an advanced STEM topic from their internship at the Stone Ridge Innovation Summit and/or other presentation venues.
- Students participate in STEM Certificate enrichment events such as meetings with professional STEM experts and field trips to area science labs and technology institutes.
- Students serve for at least one semester on the STEM Certificate Student Advisory Board and have unique opportunities to advise on STEM topics that shape the life of the school.
- Students are encouraged to participate in science or computer science clubs SCGs on campus. They are also offered additional STEM opportunities in the Washington metro area such as academic lectures or events at area universities, camps, conferences, hackathons, competitions, and summits.
Eligible students that complete all program components will receive a certificate at graduation that recognizes completion of the Stone Ridge STEM Certificate Program.
