A Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for girls, Grades 1-12, with a co-educational Early Childhood Program, infant through Kindergarten age.

Stone Ridge offers many wonderful opportunities for students who are interested in pursuing the performing arts. The music department is passionate in our wish to engage our students in developing their musical abilities as well as their self-confidence and understanding of all aspects of themselves through the arts. Our goal is to develop their love and appreciation of the musical arts now and for the rest of their lives.

Try it all: sing, play the violin, cello, guitar, handbells and drums at Stone Ridge!

Upper School

Upper School music offerings

Hand Bell Ensemble is designed to teach the art of traditional English hand bell ringing and to instill in the students a love of music, technical and musical skill and the ability to perform as an ensemble.

Band and String Ensemble is designed to allow students from diverse instrumental backgrounds to come together and develop both their individual musicianship and their understanding and sense of how to work as a chamber ensemble. The group studies and performs folks music, works from the classical repertoire, and arrangements of popular and contemporary songs.

The purpose of Upper School Chorus is to teach healthy vocal technique, basic music theory, instill a love of singing, prepare students for yearly concerts, and foster a deep respect for the art of music-making.

The Music Ministry team is an outgrowth of the Campus Ministry Team. It offers students the opportunity to plan and participate in liturgies, masses, prayer services and other special events. Students of any skill level are welcome with any instrument, whether it be voice, piano, guitar, strings, woodwinds, brass or percussion.

Heartfelt is Stone Ridge’s student run a cappella group. The group was formed as an opportunity for anyone who wished to audition to have a 'collegiate a cappella group’ experience while in high school. Auditions, rehearsals and music selection is all student led. The group performs at various events throughout the year including Feast Wishes, Bonfire, and Murmur.

Middle School Orchestra

Our Middle School programming is three fold at Stone Ridge. Instrumental and choral music are also offered to enhance the students experience focusing on the development of musicianship both as an individual and as a member of a team. Students also engage in the music, language, dance and heritage of other cultures. Throughout the curriculum students are active in developing and improving their musicality and music literacy skills.

Middle School Band, Orchestra and Choir
Stone Ridge Middle School is a place for all kinds of musicians! The performance program offers three ensembles for students to choose from including both instrumental and vocal. The objective of the ensemble program is to provide well-rounded experiences on technique, musicality, understanding of the instrument/voice, developing an appreciation for the art form in its various capacities and in learning music from a variety of genres and historical periods. Empowering students to be creative, aware and self-sufficient artists with grounding in solid technique is our primary goal.

Students who are further along in their studies are encouraged to participate in the music during liturgy. Winds, Brass, Percussion, Strings and Voices of all ages are always welcome to contribute to our mass celebrations through music.

Junior Chorus

Welcome to the Stone Ridge Junior Chorus as we celebrate a special milestone, our Historic 36th Anniversary Season! As the founder and director, I welcome you to the world of music through the angelic sounds of children’s voices. As a music educator of many years on all grade levels including college and university, my joy has been in teaching each student how to sing beautifully through proper vocal technique and training giving each chorister the tools she needs to sing great music, be it sacred or secular. The beauty and power of well-trained children’s choruses is an inspiration to all and it is my joy to continue this great work.

Junior Chorus is the oldest singing group at Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart. As we begin our 36th Anniversary Season, we continue our tradition of performing choral repertoire of excellent caliber from a wide range of periods and styles.

Junior Chorus began in September of 1983 with over 70 students participating from both the Lower and Middle Schools. It was an auditioned chorus focusing, in its infancy, on the establishment of fine vocal technique, well placed head-tones, harmonic singing, diction, dynamics and advanced sacred and secular repertoire sung all for the honor and glory of God. These are the hallmarks that distinguish the Junior Chorus to this day.

Over the years, Junior Chorus has performed many outstanding Masses and concerts at Stone Ridge and throughout the metropolitan area. Junior Chorus has performed on WMAL Radio at the Kennedy Center, televised Masses for the Archdiocese of Washington, many professional performances with the Summer Opera of Washington, including productions of Tosca, La Boheme, Carmen, Pagliacci, Madame Butterfly, and others. This year Junior Chorus celebrates its 36th year of providing magnificent music for the Christmas Eve Children's Liturgy at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. Junior Chorus has sung in many of the great churches in our area, including St. Matthew's Cathedral, historic St. Patrick's Church, as well as other churches throughout the area. Each year, Junior Chorus performs with the Trinity Chamber Orchestra, singing an array of outstanding sacred, classical and popular music - from Mozart to Broadway, to opera and film.

Junior Chorus is a fine chorus for students in grades 3 - 8, who are interested in learning and performing advanced repertoire. Vocal workshops and auditions are held in September and January of each school year. Entrance into Junior Chorus is determined by several criteria. The student must demonstrate fine ability to sing on-pitch using proper vocal technique, poses fine self-discipline, demonstrated by appropriate behavior, and commit to attend all practices and performances while also continuing to maintain good academic standing within her grade level.

Music Enrichment

Music Enrichment

Middle School Violin

The purpose of this program is to expand upon our students' musical experiences and offer support to those enrolled in our performance ensembles. Stone Ridge offers a variety of after school on campus music lesson opportunities for our students.

  • Suzuki violin or cello with Silver Strings Suzuki Studio
  • Beginning piano
  • Piano, bass guitar, woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone)
  • Brass (trumpet and trombone)
  • Guitar
  • Vocal

Lessons may be private or in groups. Private instrumental lessons help develop and enhance instrumental skills in a one-on-one environment after school. The young musician will get invaluable support and guidance while the advanced student can focus on more demanding repertoire and technique. Stone Ridge students currently participating in a school ensemble are encouraged to take private lessons.

Registration is open to all students AND siblings of Stone Ridge families. We hope this will allow parents to provide musical enrichment to more members of their family and that students and siblings may discover and share their talents with our community and with each other. While we are thrilled to invite sibling participation, we want to clarify that current Stone Ridge students will receive priority scheduling until the registration deadline.
