Head Varsity Coach: John Witherspoon

John Witherspoon was named the Head Coach of the Stone Ridge Varsity Basketball team in the fall of 2018, bringing an extensive and successful career of coaching to Stone Ridge.

Coach Witherspoon has previously coached as the Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach at the Academy of Holy Cross in Kensington, MD and as the Assistant Boy's Coach at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. Affectionately known as Coach Spoon, John is also the founder of 1onNone Basketball, a girls basketball training organization based in Germantown, MD, and has served as the Program Director since 2006. Under his leadership, 1onNone has matriculated 25 Division I student-athletes, 45 Division II and III student-athletes, as well as three athletes to play professionally in the United States, and seven athletes to play in professional leagues internationally.

Coach Witherspoon played collegiate basketball for both the State University of New York at Potsdam and the University of Minnesota before playing in Amateur and Professional leagues across the United States. Growing up in Buffalo, New York, Coach Witherspoon also won the City Championship in high school before attending St. Nicholas Tolentine in the Bronx, NY for a post-grad year in which the basketball team was voted the USA Today National Championship team.

Off the court, Coach Witherspoon has been a member of the Montgomery Country Police Department for more than 20 years. Coach Witherspoon has worked within the MCPD in the following departments: Investigations, Patrol, School Resource Officer, Training Instructor, and other Supervisory Positions. Coach Witherspoon is currently assigned to Special Victims Investigations Unit, Runaway/ Missing/Abducted Children’ Division/ Human Trafficking Task Force. As a nationally recognized expert in Juvenile Human trafficking and missing children, Detective Witherspoon was recently named the 2018 Missing Children's Investigator of the Year by the Department of Justice for his work in solving over 175 missing children's cases on 2017.

As a true native New Yorker, Coach Witherspoon is an unwavering fan of the Knicks, NY Giants, and Yankees. John is the father of a son and two daughters - to whom he credits his love for teaching the game of basketball. Crediting his faith and belief in God, Coach Witherspoon is committed to the proper teaching and application of basketball principles and using basketball to help create and develop student-athletes to be productive contributors to society.
