Policy for Opting Out of On-Campus Learning

If a family decides it is in the best interest of their child to opt out of on-campus learning/instruction, the family must contact the Head of the Division (if you have not done so before the date of this communication). More information will be provided soon about our hybrid instruction technology.

Lower School note: Please be advised in the Lower School that virtual instruction will be presented differently during hybrid learning, given that the teacher will be presenting while teaching the class on campus and not presenting directly to the children at home.

Policy on Student Learning Pods Off-Campus

We expect all families to follow appropriate social distancing protocols, regardless of whether the activity they are engaged in is academic or social. If you choose to set up a learning pod for your child during virtual instruction, the grouping of students must allow for adequate spacing between the students, and they must wear masks indoors. If they cannot or will not, then they need to stay home with virtual instruction. The prior rationale for pods––of having a shared covenant across families to break distancing rules within the pod but agree to common, strict protocols outside the pods––no longer applies now that those students are rejoining the broader Stone Ridge community on campus.

Health and Safety Tips to Prepare for Returning Campus

Magnus Health Screening Compliance (Magnus Health V2 App)

We ask that all families begin using the Magnus application on a daily basis, starting on Wednesday, September 30. By starting a week in advance of returning to campus, we can assist families with any glitches or questions that might arise. It also will help families become familiar with the questions asked and provide the School with a baseline set of information.

Little Hearts, Lower School, and Middle School families must submit the screening report by 7:00 am. Upper School families should submit it by 8:00 am.

The screening may be submitted starting after midnight each day, but we ask that you not complete it until after your child is awake in the morning. Symptoms can develop overnight, and if your child presents symptoms on campus, you will be required to pick him/her up immediately.

To download the Magnus Health V2 App, please follow these steps. If you have problems with the App, contact Michelle Cofino.

Additional Reminders for Students

Good hand hygiene: Count for at least 20 seconds and wash the front, back, and in-between their fingers with soap and warm water.

Wearing your mask: Getting used to wearing a mask for a long period of time takes practice. Practice in your house this week.

Putting on and taking off your mask safely: Make sure your hands are clean when putting on a mask. Take time to practice removing the mask without touching the inside of the mask and practice lowering and raising it for lunchtime.

Standing or sitting six feet apart: Set up markers in your house so you can visualize 6 feet. Stone Ridge will have markers in the hallways. Practice sitting six feet from a family member.

Do you have a working thermometer? Check student's temperature every morning. We follow the CDC guideline of 100.4 or higher as our benchmark. Students must stay home until fever-free without the use of a fever reducer.

Have you purchased extra masks? Make sure you have plenty of masks at home so you can bring at least two clean masks to school every day. Mark your name on the mask. See the definition of masks under Health & Safety.

Have you selected a reusable water bottle for school? Our water fountains will not be in service. We do have the refillable stations working so that students and employees can refill a water bottle. Bring your bottle each day and mark your name on the bottle!

Stay Gator Strong with plenty of sleep, exercise, and relaxation; eat a balanced diet; and stay hydrated!

Lower School Uniform Adjustment

To help with the physical distancing challenge of our youngest learners, the Lower School is making a temporary adjustment to dress on PE days. The children will wear PE uniforms to school: Stone Ridge uniform blouse, Stone Ridge athletic shorts, Stone Ridge sweatshirts and sweatpants (when needed), and sneakers. On non-PE days, the students will wear their uniform with uniform shoes. Uniforms will be worn to Primes and Assemblies as well.

SAGE Lunch

SAGE lunch service will resume on October 6, for K-Grade 12 students. In accordance with safety and health guidance, SAGE will provide students enrolled in the program with individually packaged healthy and delicious lunches each day students are on campus. Lunches will be delivered to the classrooms, where students will eat safely distanced; when weather permits, students may eat outside.

SAGE has prepared a tentative menu for Stone Ridge. Please use this form to make your child’s lunch selection by Thursday, October 1.

Families must elect the standard, vegetarian, gluten free, or allergen-sensitive lunch for the fall timeframe (October-December). If you did not previously elect SAGE lunch, you may use the form to sign up at this time. If you need to cancel SAGE lunch for the fall, you may do so via that same form.

Stone Ridge has adjusted the price of the lunch program due to the reduced lunch service days this fall. For October-December, the reduced price is as follows:

  • Kindergarten-Grade 5: $288 (approximately 48 lunches at $6 each)
  • Grades 6-12: $126 (approximately 21 lunches at $6 each)

Stone Ridge will provide appropriate credits to student billing accounts in December to reflect the reduced number of lunch service days this fall. (We will wait until the Christmas break to apply credits to allow for the possibility that future campus closures could further reduce the number of lunch service days.)

For additional information on SAGE’s safety planning, please visit the SAGE website and this document on SAGE safety protocols for clients (not specific to Stone Ridge).

Athletics

Addressing Maryland’s Return of High School Sports

As of this writing, Stone Ridge is not planning a return to sports competition prior to January 2021 in conjunction with the previous communication and plan for truncated seasons from the Independent School League.

As we continue to navigate a return to sport competition, Stone Ridge will communicate a specific timeline to the community. In the meantime, we will continue to let our Guiding Principles for Athletics, identified and shared in our August 28 communication, lead our decision-making and planning efforts.

Department of Athletics’ Guiding Principles

  1. Health and Safety for all members of the Stone Ridge Athletics community;
  2. General fitness training opportunities
  3. Athletics community building;
  4. Sport-specific training opportunities;
  5. Intramural program opportunities;
  6. Varsity & JV & Middle School Team roster determinations;
  7. Varsity Team competition;
  8. JV Team competition;
  9. Middle School Team competition

Stone Ridge remains committed to our interscholastic programming and the likelihood of a resumption to competition in January 2021 as permitted through national, state, local, league, and School regulation and guidance. As conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to shift in the coming weeks and months, our goal will be to release an accurate sports season schedule by December for the community.

With the forecast of shortened sport seasons limiting the time for tryouts, it remains our plan to hold Upper School tryouts for programs that require tryouts prior to January 2021, and Middle School tryouts after January 2021. Students and families will be notified several weeks in advance of formal tryout dates for each program.

Each sport program will vary in its capacity to support teams in resuming to competition, and it is our hope that we are able to support internal sport participation at Stone Ridge if interscholastic participation is unable to return in every sport or remains limited in certain sports or at certain levels.

As we plan for the formation of Upper School sport teams in the coming months, Upper School students should reference this master program interest roster. These rosters were populated from a student interest survey in August, if students do not see their name on the roster or would like to change anything, they should email Dr. Maguire directly.

October Schedule for Middle and Upper School Athletics

Important change: Participation will be limited to days that students are already on campus for classes. Thus, if it is a Blue Team hybrid learning week, only Blue Team students will be able to participate in after school offerings that week; and vice versa for Gold Team hybrid learning weeks.

Middle School

MS Required Physical Education

During hybrid learning, students will be required to maintain participation in both on-campus and virtual programming in conjunction with their hybrid schedule. Students that elect to remain completely in virtual learning will not be required to come to campus and complete virtual programming will be made available. Programming for students on-campus will take place during the school day for all Middle School students.

Middle School students will not be required to change for PE during hybrid lLearning and should wear athletic shorts or leggings under their uniform kilts. Middle School Physical Education will take place on the following days when students are on campus:

  • Grade 5: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays
    Anticipated Hybrid Learning Activities: Socially distanced Coordination, Motor Skills, Team Building, Traditional PE Games, and General Fitness activities
  • Grades 6, 7, 8: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays
    Anticipated Hybrid Learning Activities: Socially distanced Spin, Yoga, and Fitness Classes

Virtual Physical Education in its current format will conclude on Thursday, October 1 for all Middle School students, and resume on Tuesday, October 13 for students that are participating in virtual learning that week. More information will be forthcoming, communicated directly to the students through email.

Middle School Optional On-Campus Opportunities

Similar to the offerings during the month of September, Middle School students will have the opportunity to stay on campus after school for limited sport training opportunities in the afternoons. After school activities for Middle School students are completely optional and will continue to be limited to outdoor team sport training that can be adequately socially distanced and accommodated on Stone Ridge field space.

The sign-up process for optional activities will continue in a similar manner to our September programming, utilizing Sign-up Genius in a direct email to the Middle School student email accounts at 6:00 pm on the Thursday prior to the week of activity. Sessions will continue to be limited to a certain number of participants, which will be indicated on the sign-up and may vary week to week - taking into consideration state, local, and School guidance.

Sessions are planned to begin and continue as follows:

  • Mondays: Beginning October 19 (no Monday classes on 10/5 or 10/12)
    Grade 5 Soccer Skill Training - Bermuda Field - 3:30-4:45 pm
  • Tuesdays: Beginning October 13
    Grades 5-8 Lacrosse Skill Training - Gator Field - 3:30-4:45 pm
  • Wednesdays: Beginning October 7
    Grade 6-8 Soccer Skill Training - Bermuda Field - 3:30-4:45 pm
  • Fridays: Beginning October 8
    Grades 5-8 Field Hockey Skill Training - Gator Field - 3:30-4:45 pm

Upper School

Upper School on-campus physical activity opportunities will continue to be similar to our September offerings; however, most offerings will shift to the afternoons due to the adjusted Upper School start time, in conjunction with limited daylight hours and cooler weather.

Upper School Optional On-Campus Opportunities

Programming during October for Upper School students is completely optional and will continue to carry a primary focus on general fitness training, combined with limited sport training opportunities. As noted in August, these fall months pose a great opportunity to strike a balance in training and preparation for seasons ahead. With several months remaining until the resumption of competition, we have intentionally focused on a general fitness approach and limited sport-specific training to support a positive environment, aiming to prevent physical and psychological burnout prior to entering our competitive seasons.

During hybrid learning, our sport training opportunities that will be open to all US students will primarily be limited to outdoor field sports that we can accommodate on campus at Stone Ridge. As logistical feasibility permits, we are hopeful to provide some training opportunities for other sports in the coming weeks and months. Some of these opportunities may be limited to returning varsity players or certain grade levels while progressing into training and adhering to distancing and capacity guidelines.

Signing up for activities: Students must sign-up to participate. The sign-up process for optional activities will continue in a similar manner to our September programming, utilizing Sign-up Genius in a direct email to the Upper School student email accounts at 6:00 pm on the Thursday prior to the week of activity. Sessions will continue to be limited to a certain number of participants, which will be indicated on the sign-up, which may vary week to week, taking into consideration State, local, and School guidance. Activities may vary week to week, but will generally include:

Mornings: Anticipated 8:00-8:45 am

  • Monday through Friday: Lap Swimming

Afternoons: Anticipated, 3:30-4:45 pm

  • Mondays: Yoga, Strength & Conditioning, Spin Classes
  • Tuesdays: Lacrosse & XC/Track Training; Golf & Spin Class
  • Wednesdays: Field Hockey Training, Golf Class
  • Thursdays: Soccer & XC/Track Training; Yoga, Strength & Conditioning, Spin Classes

and feedback are welcome!
