Who would have guessed that describing something as “normal” would be cause for such celebration? But isn’t that true right now! There is a very joyful tone in every voice when describing the 2022-2023 academic year as “normal.” It means we have returned to so many of the routines, traditions, and community events that are hallmarks of a Stone Ridge education and which make being a student here so special. The joy and energy on campus is electric, and one positive outcome of the pandemic is that so many stakeholders have expressed that– perhaps more than ever before–they deeply and genuinely appreciate what Stone Ridge means to them. But the truth of the matter is, this year is actually not “normal.” This year is a milestone for Stone Ridge as we celebrate our Centennial and reflect on 100 Years of Sacred Heart tradition in the DC region.
This issue of the Stone Ridge Magazine focuses on the theme for our year, Goal V: Personal Growth in an Atmosphere of Wise Freedom. As we reflect on the past century here at Stone Ridge, it is profound to think about the changes and growth that have transpired in that time. Highlighted on these pages are just a sampling of the ways in which our institution is on a path of continual growth and how individuals within the Stone Ridge community are helping to move our school forward.
Please read on to learn more about our Sacred Heart Commission on Goals process and the self-reflection that we are undertaking as a community that is deeply dedicated to mission. Learn more about our retreat program, Project Approach in Lower School, our Sacred Heart exchange program, the arts and athletics, and so much more. I draw your attention to the section on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, where our new program director, Kim Gayle, and I join together in conversation about this important work and why it matters. Also in this section, you will hear from our DEI Practitioners and learn about some of the professional development Stone Ridge is investing in related to DEI. As a Catholic School that is rooted in the heart of Christ, our path towards justice is always a work in progress and we are continually called to build a community where all feel a sense of belonging.
I sincerely hope to see many of you back on campus for our April 29-30 Alumnae Weekend and Centennial Liturgy. Information can be found in the magazine and on our website with further details. It won’t be the same without you, and I encourage you to bring your family and friends to join the fun!
With gratitude,
Catherine Ronan Karrels ’86
