Erin Johnson ’24 joined students at the Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart in Sydney, Australia, for Sacred Heart Day. Erin is the school’s first international visitor since 2020, says Murray Kerstens, the School’s Exchange Coordinator, “It was an absolute pleasure having Erin with us.” Erin recounted her experience to share with the community...

In June, I traveled to Sydney, Australia, with my older brother to visit our friends we first met in grade school long ago. I was able to go on an exchange day to Kincoppal-Rose Bay School of the Sacred Heart in Sydney. The school overlooks the Sydney Harbor and the Sydney Opera House! Although it was on the other side of the world, it felt familiar. I only went to the school for one day, and that day they were celebrating Sacred Heart Day. The first similarity I found was when we drove up to the school, a group of girls was cheering outside the front gates and holding up signs, something I’ve seen at Stone Ridge many times. The girls were all very welcoming and kind, and the day was very fun. It was like a field day of sorts, with a lot of singing and dancing. In the morning, we went to mass, and they closed the mass with the Sacred Heart song in French, which I could sing as we have sung it many times at Stone Ridge. After that, I decorated flower pots for Ukraine with the year 5s, had lunch, and then went back to the gym to hear each grade present their songs for the celebration. It was a great visit and one I will remember for a long time! –Erin Johnson ’24
